Conceptual Project

Masdar City

Tags: Marketing, Presentation-Design, Sustainable Urban Design, Premium Custom Design

As a supporter of environment-friendly, green, and sustainable initiatives, I wanted to do a project on sustainable urban design. Masdar City came up several times while I was doing my research. I liked what they were doing, and the initiative naturally fit into what I wanted to do. So, I took time to further research who they are and what they were doing and came up with an idea of what a presentation design might look like if Masdar City was my client.

Disclaimer
Neither Masdar City nor any of its affiliates hired me for this project. I undertook this initiative on my own to explore my capacity to work with large organisations on high-stakes projects. The data were generated based on publicly available information of Masdar City and Masdar, and the contents of this presentation should be taken for demonstration purposes only.

Understanding the Client and Their VisionLaunched in 2006 near Abu Dhabi, UAE, the Masdar City project is an ambitious undertaking to create a sustainable, zero-carbon city. It is spearheaded by Masdar (Abu Dhabi Future Energy Company). Their goal is to demonstrate how advanced green technologies, renewable energy systems, and sustainable urban planning practices can minimise environmental impact. My role was to design a presentation that would communicate this vision effectively to a potential partner, a green tech company titled “Green Horizons Technologies” (fictional).

The Design ProcessI began the project by identifying the core brand values: sustainability, innovation, clean energy, urban efficiency, eco-friendliness, and carbon neutrality. These values guided the design process.I gave my best effort to imagine the target audience: Green Horizons Technologies. Their values were categorised as innovation, scalability, sustainability, profitability, efficiency, and technology-driven. This informed the narrative and visual style of the presentation, and I worked towards positioning Masdar City as a premier hub for this company. For this project, I prioritised quality over quantity. The goal was to pack the information into a 10-slide presentation. I designed iteratively, with slides undergoing multiple revisions to ensure high quality. I made use of design assets and third-party resources to achieve a clean look while also expediting the process.

Visual storytelling was another core focus with typography and layout. Initial designs were very crowded, but I was able to simplify them into a minimalist look.

The project starts with a grim reality of an urban concrete jungle, implying suffocating life in a crowded city. It quickly shifts to Masdar City's vision to alleviate scenarios like this. The next few slides help the audience understand what Masdar City has been working towards. The images help the audience understand the scale of impact and values added. With these snapshots being shown, the audience is appealed to the possibility of a partnership and how they can work together with the management team towards a sustainable opportunity.

My goal was to help my client communicate to their prospective partner how partnering with Masdar City aligns with both financial goals and environmental sustainability. I used my skills, assets, and tools to achieve that through visual storytelling.

Ultimately, this project wasn't just about aesthetics; it was about crafting a message that would inspire action for the viewers. I tried my best to fit the client's goals with creative design and produce a presentation that is both informative and engaging. That is my gift to the movement for a safe, green and a sustainable planet.

Personalised and visually appealing presentation slides make a strong and memorable impression on your audience. If the audience remembers something unique about you, you can be sure they are taking your message home with them.I would love to help you score that strong impression. Let's chat!

Additional iterations were conducted to maintain consistency and craft a cohesive, story-like flow across the entire deck.

2. You can click / tap on the images and view in full-screen

The Design
Mustafa’s slide designs stand out for their visual appeal, achieved through thoughtful color choices and a professional aesthetic. Despite sections with heavier text, the slides maintain a minimal and uncluttered look, thanks to strategic use of white space. Clean typography enhances the flow, while consistent layouts ensure a polished and cohesive presentation.
To complement the event, a professionally designed cover slide was created, perfectly setting the tone for the presentation.

Maps highlighting various locations helped the audience quickly visualize where the hotels were situated, accompanied by brief background details. The exploration concluded with a focused spotlight on Alpenrose Blumendorf.

The story of Alpenrose was presented on-screen in a clear and concise manner, avoiding information overload and keeping the audience engaged.

A timeline provided a quick overview of Alpenrose's history, offering a concise snapshot of key milestones. For those interested in exploring further, the slides were accessible on their tablets for a deeper dive.Special attention was given to visualizing the data using carefully designed cues. These visual elements helped the audience grasp the story of Alpenrose Blumendorf's resilience during the pandemic by connecting the data to its broader context.

Infographics provided the audience with a clear, bird’s-eye view of the landscape and the competition, presenting key information in a compact and easily digestible format.
